Columbia BMX off of I-20 held a weeknight race on Tuesday. Coming off of Logan's 2nd place / Last place finish over the weekend, he was eager to give it another shot. I have changed his gearing to 49.9" and this would be the first time he got a chance to ride it.
When we pulled up there were a lot of kids there, so we were hoping for a good size moto for him to race. Turns out only one other kid was in his group. So we warmed up for about an hour, then it was time to race. He lined up on the gate and waited for the signal. You are supposed to try to break down the gate when the first light goes off. His timing was a little early and he spun out before the gate even dropped. Amazingly, he did not loose his balance, kept it upright, and still beat the other kid into turn #1. He won the first moto by a few seconds. Coming out of the Finish area he gave the fist pump and we shared exploding fists for his first victory.
The other racer has been racing for about 8 months, so I was expecting him to step it up for moto #2 and the final. Our plan was to take it a little easier on this moto and save energy for the final. He got a great start out of the gate, beat him through turn #1, then backed it down to finish a few seconds ahead.
For the final race we planned to go all out and leave it on the track. He made it clean out of the gate and kept the gas on all the way to the end. He finished while the other guy was still half way down the final stretch.
He is very proud of his 1st place finish and trophy. If nothing else, this was a huge confidence builder. He is already looking forward to the next race with hopes that the moto will be much bigger. I got a feeling that we will be traveling to race before the year is over.
Enjoy the Experience.
