I have been toying with the idea of Single Speed, 29er, Rigid, Steel for some time, but could not find exactly what I was looking for.
I decided on a 16" On-One Inbred for 26" wheels. The nice thing about this frame is that it has sliding drop-outs and a hanger in case I wuss out. The frame has a long top tube, 23", which matches the Cake and gives me the stretched out feeling that I like. I went with the On-One 29er carbon fork with 47mm offset so that I could run it 69er or 26er. Currently it is set up as a 69er.
I took the bike out for the first time yesterday at Killer 3 on the way back from Charleston. The gearing is set up at 33-17 which seemed perfect for me. I have to say that this is one sweet ride! I was only searching for gears when I felt spun out, but this is K3 and it is a fast trail. Most of the climbs were not a problem, and the lack of suspension really did not bother me either. Now I can see why so many people ride SS bikes. They are quite, efficent, simple machines. And the 69er set up is going to stay. It is hard to beat that 29er up front. The stearing is going to take some getting used to, but it is much quicker than I anticipated.
I look forward to riding it at Harbison on Friday (as long as it does not rain)
Hopefully I will get to try it out at Dupont around the end of the Month!
