Last year my daughter was in 2nd grade and we had some difficulty getting her motivated to study and pay attention in class. On her last report card of the year she made 1-A, 2-Bs and 2-Cs. So we came up with a financial plan to get her motivated. The way it works is she gets $20 for each A, nothing for a B, and she owes us $20 for everything C and below. We expected that this would help, but nothing like it did. This first quarter of her 3rd Grade year she scored all A’s with the lowest A being a 97. We are extremely proud of her and $100 is what she earned. Now we have taken this opportunity to also teach some other important lessons. She is required to save 20%, donate 10% to what ever charity she wants, and the remaining 70% she can do with what she likes. Now here is where politics gets involved. The school she attends had a mock election for the kids and Obama won by a slim margin. Hannah voted for McCain and was a little let down about the results. She inquired who we were voting for and why. The lesson went something like this:
D: You know that $100 you received for working really hard in Class?
H: Yes.
D: Well you are basically paying 30% in taxes under the current administration. That means while Bush is president only $30 dollars is being taken out of your earnings to pay for roads, schools, military, and government. If McCain is elected you will not have to pay any additional money in taxes. However, if Obama is elected, since you earn the most you can, he will take more money from you and give it the kids like your brother that did not do as well on their report cards.
For example: You will still give your $30 to run the government, but an additional $20 will be handed to your brother to make things fair.
H: But Dad that is not FAIR! I WORKED HARD FOR MY MONEY AND MY BROTHER DID NOT. WHY SHOULD HE GET ANY?
D: Welcome to the Republican Party sweetie.
Enjoy the Experience.
